First 1-Year-Experience of a Radiologist Leading Primary Breast Cancer Clinic

Abstract

|
|
Purpose: To describe the experience of a radiologist who is leading primary breast cancer clinic.
Materials and Methods: We selected 1615 patients who visited our radiologist - leading - primary breast clinic which belongs to OB-GY(obstetrics and gynecology) Hospital and were taken mammography or bilateral whole breast ultrasonography between March 2007 and February 2008. They were classified into screening group and diagnostic group. We analyzed each group’s ages and symptomatic distribution, biopsy numbers and results, cancer detection rates and cancer stages.
Results: Their ages were between 19 to 85 (average age: 42). And 47% of them were under 40 years old. There were screening purpose in 1215, symptomatic in 400. A total of 194 lesions in 178 patients underwent biopsy; 98 lesions of 87 screening patients and 96 lesions of 91 diagnostic patients. Twenty four out of 1615 patients were diagnosed as breast cancer - the cancer detection rate was 1.5%. Among them, 8 patients were from screening group and the cancer detection rate was 0.66 % (8/1215). Especially, breast cancer patients from screening group were all in the stage of 0 or Ⅰ. None of them had a lymph node metastasis.
Conclusion: Radiologists can play important roles in the field of primary breast cancer clinics. With their radiologic point of view, skillful examining tools, and experiences, they can detect early stage breast cancers more than any other kind of doctors. They would reduce erroneous diagnoses and incongruent therapies in the field of breast cancer. Radiologists’ active participation in the primary breast cancer clinics is very effective and recommendable.
